Champion SpotlightLinda Owen has been a supporter of the Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank for over 50 years. She was first introduced to our work many years ago when we were operating out of a local church in the Issaquah community. “I helped out in a very simple way of helping our neighbors that had food insecurity. The food distribution was basic, as the volunteers filled grocery bags with items that had been donated before opening the doors each week,” Linda shared.
While raising her four children, Linda supported the food bank through participating in food drives and donating when she could. When she drove her grandson to volunteer at the food bank as a part of his high school community service project, Linda was inspired by seeing the growth in services offered.
From there, Linda got her whole family involved with supporting the food bank in different ways. A new tradition was born in her family, with each member bringing donations for the food bank to their Christmas celebration in lieu of Christmas presents for each other. “The goal was to create stewardship for others for our next generation, and it has worked as those children and grandchildren are now adults and have a good sense of community needs,” Linda shared.
To Linda, the mission of the Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank signifies a prioritization of community care.
“Being a leader in the green bag program in your neighborhood, helping sort at the warehouse, taking part in groups that work to promote new ideas and bring energy and funds to the organization. There are endless needs that we can all participate in.” added Linda.
Throughout her years of being involved, Linda has had the opportunity to watch the Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank grow and adapt to the needs of the community. “The food bank provides more than just food. They are there for those who need assistance with housing, job searching, etc. Over time, a very holistic approach has been established for those in need. The competent staff and treasured volunteers have many talents and it is incredible what is being done by the food bank. The staff consistently reviews the services provided and is always looking for ways to make access easier and more convenient,” Linda explained.
Linda encourages her community to get involved in any way they can. “Access the Issaquah Food Bank website, see what opportunities they have for areas that you are interested in. The greater Issaquah area has some of the most talented minds in the region. It is not a job, it is a joy volunteering as we are experiencing a higher demand from those using the food bank resources. Come, be a part of one of Issaquah’s jewels for all humanity,” Linda offered.
We are incredibly grateful for Linda and her family’s steadfast support throughout the years. Every day, we are privileged and humbled to work alongside volunteers and donors who exemplify a sense of empathy for everyone who is struggling with access to food, resources, and basic needs.
