Champion Spotlight: 20 Years of Giving

By Brooke Wiles, Donor Engagement Officer, and Steve Wilcox, Development & Communications Coordinator

For more than 20 years, an Issaquah couple has been making a difference in the lives of their neighbors in need by donating to the Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank. They asked to remain anonymous for this story, but their dedication and generosity speak volumes.

The couple moved to the community more than 30 years ago to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

“In 2002 we had some clothes and shoes we wanted to donate, and our daughter suggested we go to the food bank and talk to the volunteers,” they said. “We were very impressed with the organization, the people, and the activity we saw, so we began donating both clothes and money.

“We felt compelled to give because of both the perceived need and the direct results of getting food and clothes to the people.”

Although the organization doesn’t currently distribute non-emergency clothing due to facility and resource limitations, the couple has continued to donate faithfully. “We are very concerned about people going hungry and try to help alleviate the problem,” they said.

The couple is now in their 80s, and their commitment to helping others remains strong. "Even though our health and age have limited our physical capabilities, we can continue doing something positive. We feel appreciated just seeing the people in our community receiving the food bank’s services."

The Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank’s financial stewardship has also been a big part of the couple’s ongoing support. “The food bank is a very positive force for helping people in need,” they said, “with the bulk of the donations going directly to easing the problem. It’s one of the few organizations where you see direct use of donations.”

At the same time, the couple recognizes that community need has been increasing, and that “the food bank needs to grow to meet the demand.”

“The need is great, the effort is worthwhile, and success depends on volunteers and timely donations,” they concluded.

We thank our generous donor couple — WE know who you are! — for your enduring support for your neighbors in need!
