To Reduce or Prevent the Onset of Heat Illnesses:

  1. Drink plenty of water. Rcommended amount on hot days is 1 quart per hour (1 cup per 15 minutes).

  2. Know the signs/symptoms of heat-related illness; monitor yourself and co-workers.

  3. Avoid extended time in direct sun. Older adults, children and sick or overweight individuals are at greater risk from extreme heat.

  4. Use cooling fans/air conditioning if possible.

  5. Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes.

  6. Avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and heavy meals.

  7. Be safe if you're on the water. Warm weather does not always mean warm water. Local lakes and rivers can be cold enough to cause  hypothermia, even in the summer. Be safe and wear personal protective devices like life jackets when on the water.

Please stay safe and check on your neighbors, relatives, and those vulnerable to extreme temperatures!

If you need a place to cool down, visit wa211.org or dial 2-1-1.
